Colouring Mantle

Colouring Mantle

Last time I talked about how I wrote Spider-Man, then didn't make comics anymore for 30 years... We'll come back to that.

Remember this page from two updates back?

After being bowled over by the black-and-white line art I receive from Gian Fernando in the Philippines, I pick myself up off the ground and send the pages to Irma Kniivila in Canada.

In addition to being a wonderful cartoonist (check out her work at irmaillustration.com), Irma colours comic books for Marvel, DC, BOOM!, Image... and Mantle.

And in a way, Irma's process is even more magical and unknown to me than Gian's. I mean, I have opinions. Early on, I showed Irma some colourists I enjoyed and we refined our approach on a couple sample pages.

But from that point onwards, page after page, Irma applies her craft and makes a series of choices that enrich our story and bring life to the world of Mantle.

Like this:

I love this process. But there's still a key element missing from the page above, right?

I'll tell you about lettering Mantle in our next update.
